Fall De"Light"Full Downhill

Wow what a blast and long too! Nine riders braved the cold of late October and tested their lighting systems on a 2 hour downhill cross-coffee ride. Lights lost batteries, batteries lost charge but the smiles on the riders faces turned out to be all the light we really needed.

We eased our way up to the top of Red Mt. arriving there in freezing cold blustery weather. Lights were repaired, clothing and pads we donned, and children were rounded up. The downhill ride finally got started. Red Top was in wonderful shape, no dust and not too slippery. Then came the Coffee Run (I swear the rocks grow out there) with it's usual tests of pedaling skill but we all made it fairly gracefully. Lots of things get hidden in the dark. Now for a blast down Milky Way, lights beginning to fade, night starting to get colder. Soon we arrived at Warfield Hall, load up the trucks and head to Greener's basement for a beer. It might be our last ride for the season, there is snow in the forecast, but if it is possible to RIDE, the HOLY WOW GANG WILL RIDE.

Thursday Night Ride(Oct 22)

When: Thursday Oct 22, @6:00PM
Where: Greener's
Ride: Easy way to Red Top then ride Red Top to Coffee Run to Milky Way to Warfield. Maybe an annual Fall Off The Mountain In The Dark Downhill. I believe Norm(injured) has offered to drive the shuttle for us. See you there.

Tuesday Night Was Big

There really are some riders out there. Eight of the good old boys showed up for some high speed, artificial light induced downhill. We had a ton of fun and put on an awesome light show for the traffic on the Rossland hill. Greener gave us one more campfire and the evening was perfect. Got the interest flowing again. Looking forward to Red Top on Thursday.

Tuesday Night Ride (Oct 20)

When: Tuesday Oct 20 @ 6:00PM
Where: Greener's
Ride: KC to Cemetery to Bones to Wagon Road. We start that way, why not finish that way. Wagon road should be easy now that we are in shape. Let's ride.

Thursday Night Ride Report

Oh yes we did ride on Thursday, I just did not get to this until now. Spent the weekend in Spokane with some of my work compatriots. Good time but NO riding just eating and drinking. Anyway, back to the Thursday ride report. Four of the gang (I am wondering where the rest are at) rode a ride that we haven't done yet this year. We rode out Mo's down Larry's through Oflanagan's connector to the Coffee Run back up the KC Saddle to the Water Tower and home to Dave's shop for a beer. Another great ride. See you Tuesday.

Thursday Night Ride(Oct 15)

When: Thursday, Oct 15 @ 6:00PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Thinking about a car drop. Maybe we should give Milky Way another try now that the dust should be settled. Open to suggestions. Let me know what you think.

And Then There Were Three(Oct 13)

Tuesday night ride was attended by Don Bowie, Murray Gilchrist, and Dave Nutini. These guys are real hard core mountain bikers. The temperature was about 2°C at Rick Greene's house and it was snowing lightly. They set out on a ride up Dale's Trail to Red Top intersection and descended Red Top on about .25 inches of snow. The trail surface was tacky and hard. The visibility was clear with snow falling and visible in the headlights. What a glorious evening! Sure missed the rest of the gang. Hope to get a few more rides in before real winter sets in. Maybe a trip to the Top of Red.

Tuesday Night Ride (Oct 13)

Our riding days are numbered so let's make the best of it while we have decent weather.

When: Tuesday, Oct 13 @ 6:00 PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Maybe Red Head. Should be thinking about Red from the Top one of these days.

Refreshments from the fund if I can still find it.

Tour de View

The Tour de View started at Greener's on Thursday Oct 8 @ 6:00PM. It must be late in the season because interest seems to be waning. Only four lucky riders showed up for the tour, but they were in for a real treat. We wound our way up a familiar route to the top of KC and were treated to an early fall view of the City of Rossland and the mountains glowing in the fading light. Looked like snow towards Record Ridge. From KC we opted for a full descent of Pale Ale, the rains and dew had done their thing and the trail surface was very good(little dust if any). The new section at the bottom was great and we popped out on the road at the bottom wishing for more, perhaps connecting to Milky Way, maybe some day. On up the road towards Green Door with a stop to check out the view up the river. It is very dark by now and the lights of Rivervale, Gennelle, and perhaps even Castlegar are in the view screen. Down the road to Green Door and over to the bench on Roger's to take in a view of Trail, Warfield and today's vein of gold for the area Big Daddy Tech. Too many lights at Tech was the conclusion. The trip along Roger's was challenging but rewarding and soon we were climbing through the old Cemetery (good thing it was not Halloween yet) and making our way out of Happy Valley to Kim's house for a cold one. Super tour. Thanks Kim. We also picked up our refund cheque from Holy Wow 18 so make sure you get to see Kim and pick up your cheque if you were on the trip.

Hopefully refreshments from the fund @ Greener's.

And Then There Were Five

It was a warmish evening in comparison to the last couple of rides. Five of us ventured on a XCish ride around the bottom of Red Mt. We saw Larry's, Miner's, Mo's, Curly's, Gasline, Oflanagan's and the Centennial Trail. Good night ride. It kept the heart rate up but not red-lined. Nice!!!

Tamarack Dukabor in the Dark was Enlightening

Seven riders who were NOT afraid of the rain and wanted to climb Malde Creek road set out on a wonderful adventure at about 6:15PM on Thursday Oct 1. The ride up the road was as painful as usual although the temperature was cool enough that it cut down the perspiration level a bit. They have graded and re-contoured the road and now it feels like it is all uphill whereas before it used to has some flatter resting sections.
The ride down was glorious and long. What a wonderful piece of single track, a premiere night ride. Beers were in the basement again, it is just too cold out.

Thursday Night Ride(Oct 1)

When: Thursday Oct 1 @ 6:00PM
Where: Meet above Norm's house.
Ride: What better way to start October than with a wee car drop. Ride up Malde Creek to Tamarac then down Tamarac down Dukabor to a truck waiting in Paterson. Bring your lights.
I will need someone to pick me up from Paterson after dropping the truck off. Email me or phone me and let me know when it is convenient for you.

Greener will probably be out of town but we will be able to pick up the beer fund from Sue Greene after the ride.

Still No Rain Out

Tuesday, Sept 29 was one of the coldest rides this fall and it looked like it was going to snow or rain but still no rain out. Seven riders warmed up on the Monte Cristo climb and stayed warm through Coyote Swamp on our way to the KC Saddle and then down the other side looking for a new piece of single track near the bottom of Pale Ale. We found a sweet little piece of single track that fed us out into the big field at the bottom. It was a little dusty because it is new but has some nice berms on the corners and a big log ride. Scared that we might cool off too much, we rode back up into the saddle and down into Iron Colt just for a change of pace. Refreshments were had in Greener's basement, it was even too cold for a fire.

Monday, September 28, 2009

Tuesday Night Ride (Sept 29)

When: Tuesday Sept 29, @ 6:00PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: I have found a new piece of single track at the bottom of Pale Ale. We need to try it, Darrel Fry says there are berms on the corners. Let's ride Technogrind to the saddle down to mining school flats down top part of Milky Way check out new trail then back up the road to the KC saddle again and home via the water tower.

Refreshments from the fund at Greener's. DON'T FORGET YOUR LIGHTS or your shoes or your pack.

Milky Way Was A Brake Rutted Dust Bowl

Seven hearty souls ventured out into the night on Thursday Sept 24. We found bumps and dust. Milky Way has been pounded a lot in the last little while. In spite of the dust, a good time was has by all and the fire and refreshments at Greener's were superb.
Those of us that attended the pow wow after the ride got a special presentation on the Six String Nation(six string guitar made from 64 artifacts from all around Canada). The guy who is touring with this guitar made from Pierre Trudeau's paddle, Wayne Gretzkey's hockey stick, Rocket Richard's stanley cup ring, Nancy Greene's ski and 60 more items, was staying at Sue and Rick's place. Pretty neat guitar.

Thur Night Ride (Sept 24)

When: Thursday Sept 24 @ 6:00 PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Indian Summer Ride. Ride to the Top of KC down the backside to Mining School Flats to Milky Way to Warfield where the truck will be waiting.

Refreshments from the beer fund at Rick's after the ride.

Saturday in SV Fox Chocolate Loop

Saturday morning we awoke to the usual smells of coffee being made in the kitchen. Today we were going to ride a shorter loop and then perhaps car droop another shorter ride. As it turned out we only rode the Fox Chocolate Loop which turned out to be longer than we thought. It was a very neat trail with great climbs and smooth single track followed by some high speed swoopy downhill. Another great ride in Sun Valley.
We enjoyed a couple of cold ones in the parking area, went back to the shack for a shower, and set out to do some sight seeing in Ketchum and Sun Valley, before returning for steak dinner and the AGM of the HOLY WOW GANG.

Friday in SV Fisher Williams Creek

We got up early because we had to drive about 50 miles to get to Fisher-Williams Creek trailhead just south of Stanley Idaho. It was a crisp clear morning once again and the day promised to be another warm one. This trail is epic (about 30 km) and swickedly fast, what a blast, worth every minute spent in the truck getting to Sun Valley. If it looks like it went through the middle of a burned out forest, it did. This made for a very weird wonderful landscape. Checkout the video and then the slide show.

Every trail teaches you a different lesson if you listen carefully. Fisher Creek taught one of the Holy Wow Gang a very important lesson, one that all of us will have to take to heart as we get older. Fisher Creek lesson: When you take off your pack for a rest stop, don't be fooled into believing that the rest has made you feel lively and lighter when you get back on your bike, it just means you left your pack back at the rest stop and you get to tire yourself out going back to get it.

Thursday in SV Ride Mahoney Greenhorn

This was the longest ride that we did on the trip. We rode straight from the house down the highway towards Ketchum and turned left at Greenhorn Road. Then rode along a lovely road with some really big houses until we came to the trail head. This is where the work started. It was quite warm (80° F) and we did some really heinous (sp) climbs, according to Bob the guide, where the trail surface was loose, rocky and rutted, but as usual you get what you earn, and we had earned a magnificent downhill.Total ride distance was in the 40 km range by the time we got back to the shack. Check out the video slide show below.

Needless to say the cold beer tasted great after this ride. Crash and the boys prepared the now famous haystack meal for dinner. After dinner we relaxed and watched pictures and video from the day.

We Are Back, Sun Valley was Great, Holy Wow Made It Better!!!

The Holy Wow Gang descended upon Sun Valley and put a Kootenay licken on the trails in the area. We had a great guide (Bob Bechaud), super accommodations (The Prez), fantastic weather, good food, and superb riding. Sun Valley is a really good place to ride, even though it takes a while to drive there. Anybody want to go back next weekend.
I will post something on each ride and the AGM when time permits(I have o go to work???).
Here is a picture of our most inspirational rider. He was a little tired after trying to keep up with his new young lime green steed affectionately known as "Snot". Snot was a handful and never liked to sleep, he just partied and tried to take advantage of all the other bikes.

Stay tuned for more.

We are Here and We Brought Our Lawyer

Well, we finally made it to Sun Valley. After many GPS malfunctions and numerous 100 mph sprints we arrived in Hailey and took occupancy of a really nice home away from home. As you can see from the picture, we brought our own lawyer, John Sullinstien, with us. So far we haven't had to use him but he is on tap for breakfast in the morning.

One More Sleep Til Sun Valley

Only one more sleep and we are on our way. Just a couple of reminders for the trip.

1. Don't forget passports and/or ID.
2. You DO NOT need to bring any bike tools just spare parts specific to your bike(derailleur hangers etc.). The Doctor will bring tools, stand, and a pump(shock and tire pumps).
3. You DO NEED spare tubes and on trail tools.
4. If you have not arranged to share a bed you need enough bedding to make your sleep on the floor or couch comfortable.

See you early Wednesday morning. Estimated time of departure is between 8 and 9 AM. It is going to take some time to pack the vehicles so be earlier if possible.

Thursday Night Ride Report

Another great ride and a totally different route. About 8 of us rode out to Red Mt. and up the Red Top Single Track until it hit Dale's Trail and then up Dale's Trail(not a bad climb, thought it would be worse) until it intersected with Red Top. At this point we headed down the old Red Head route and narrowly out distanced the oncoming darkness. I think lights are going to be the order of the day for Tuesday and Thursday rides when we return from Sun Valley.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Thursday Night Ride(Sept 10)

When: Thursday Sept 10 @ 6:00 PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Circle Ride

Bring your lights if you have them. It gets dark real fast these days. Also, bring your forms and money for Kim.

Tuesday Night Improves Fitness of All But Norm

A whole wack of guys showed up for the Tuesday night training ride. It was a real sprint festival. Good workout for Holy Wow 18. Unfortunately we had one of the boys injure himself on a very slippery root. Norm has a quad (just one ) that looks like he stole it from Super Man. It is not normal, deep bruise, I think they call it a hematoma. He is going to be sore for a few days. If you get a chance, call him (362-7390) and check on his condition and wish him well.
Besides that Dario put on a fantastic feast for us. A great treat. Thanks Dario.

Monday, September 7, 2009

Tuesday Night Ride(Sept 8)

When: 6:00 PM Tuesday Sept 8
Where: Dario Cescon's House
Ride: Monte Cristo to Technogrind to Top of KC down Pale Ale back up to the KC Saddle and down the bottom of Snake to Dario's house.

Dario is putting on the Ritz for us after the ride so be prepare to be fed and watered. Thanks Dario.

Labor Day Excursion

Eight of us ventured out in the questionable weather to ride Tamarac and Dukabor Draw. The skies cleared, just as they have done this whole riding season, and we labored our way up Malde Creek and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on our way down Tamarac and Dukabor , to my truck waiting in Paterson. Putting all eight bikes on the rack was a challenge but we succeeded. Great ride. Tacky trail conditions.

Murray's Delight

Wow, what a good pedal on Thursday night . Murray Gilchrist took us on a great training route and it was definitely something we had never done before. Eight of us took off from Greener's and did a familiar route along the Old Red Mt. Road to the Top of the T-Bar up the Red Mt. haul road to the first switch-back down the Gertrude Mine Trail and(here is where it got different) then back up to the start of Old Red Head and down Red Head in the almost dark to cold beers at my place. Good ride, good times, good friends. Look out Sun Valley here we come!!!!

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Thursday Night Ride(Sept 3)

When: Thursday Sept 3 @ 6:00 PM
Where: Rick Greene's house
Ride: Murray Gilchrist's training ride for Sun Valley. Come and check it out. We have never done this before.

Holy Wow 18 Sun Valley Planning Meeting

The Prez called the meeting to order @ about 8:30PM after a couple of cold ones had already graced our tonsils.(this always makes for a spirited meeting) I am going to try and give you some highlights even though nobody took any notes.(strictly from memory)
1. Attendees

The following people have signed up for HW 18
Don Bowie
Bob Bechaud(rookie)
Craig Campbell
Dario Cescon
Rick Folger
Murray Gilchrist
Rick Greene
Kim Mercer
Ron Nutini
Dave Nutini
Al Santano
John Sullivan
Dave Shannon(rookie)
Mike Tench

2. Departure

We will be departing from Rick Greene's house @ 8:00 AM September 16, 2009. This way we should arrive in Haily sometime around 10:00PM Hailey time (one hour later than us).

3. Fees and forms

The treasurer would like payment of $450 total($150deposit + $300) as soon as possible. This seems a little high but after last years experience we decided it was easier to give money back than ask for more. The treasurer would also like to remind you to check for your documents (passports etc) and to make sure you have good extra medical coverage. Please fill out the form I emailed to you and at least bring it with you on Wednesday preferably earlier.

4. Drivers

This years drivers will be Dario Cescon(Big Red Chevy)+Greener's Trailer, Murray Gilchrist(Blazing Bazer) and Dave Shannon(Burban-Yukon). There are 13 of us leaving from Rossland. There should be plenty of room for baggage and passengers. Bob Bechaud will meet us in Hailey, he has a truck which will be useful for shuttles etc.

5. Speaking of Baggage

Limit yourself to 1 bag (hockey bag size). No coolers, we will bring a couple bigger ones for beer and what not. Prepare your bike however you would like for the trip on the Greener trailer.

6. Route

We will be going the Spokane- Missoula-Salmon route(or Kennewick Boise City route) approximate travel time 12 hours. Kim will be paying for all gas out of HW account so we will all gas up together at each stop. We will probably make a major stop in Missoula(La Grande) to pick up sausages for our arrival snack and fixins for breakfast Thursday morning.

7. Accommodations

We have rented a large house(4000 sq ft 1200sq ft garage) with 5 bedrooms. Each of 4 bedrooms have queen size beds and 1 room has a King Size bed. There is lots of other room in the house.
The beds will be allocated as follows. The Prez gets a bed (he booked the house), each of the three drivers gets a bed, that leaves the King Size(2 guys) which we will draw cards for before we leave(we'll have to have a meeting) the rest of us will either agree to bunk with a driver or have to bring there own sleeping ware(cots, sleeping bags, mats etc). We will make room for this , doesn't have to be in hockey bag(but it might fit)

8. Groceries and Meals

Meals provided-
Wed arrival
Thursday breakfast(rookies cook)
Thursday dinner(Mex Night)
Friday dinner(Italian Night)
Saturday (steak night AGM)

Cooking groups will be established and each group will shop for the meal on the afternoon of the meal. This will also give us time to shop for ourselves and enjoy the area. Thursday shop will be when you can pick up food to look after yourself for the other meals. Please try and bring food for the Thursday ride lunch, we will not be taking too much time to shop on our way there.

9. Refreshments

This category covers beer, wine and any other hallucinatory beverage that might be required. Laast year seemed to work quite well. Most just bucked up and we bought refreshments, when they were gone we bucked up again. We really did not make a decision on this but I propose that we do this again. If you want to do your own thing then your welcome to look after yourself. We can discuss this further perhaps at the card drawing ceremony.

Illegal Building Inspection

Made it back for the Tuesday September 1 ride. Montana was great. You need to go if you have not been there. Anyway, about 14 building inspectors on mountain bikes turned out for the ride which took us up to Red Mountain to see the illegal cabin that has been built just off of Alladar's alley. We seemed to take a variety of routes to get there but we all made it. The building was inspected everybody had a different opinion. It was great. We sprinted back trying to outrun a coming storm, again, a variety of routes were used. Crash said that Curly's was really curly in the dark. Cold refreshment were had on my deck while the lightening lit up the sky all around us. Holy Wow!!!!!!
Speaking of Holy Wow, we had close to all the members out for the ride so we decided to have a planning meeting right then and there. I will post the highlights in the next blog entry.

Look Who's Riding

Seven riders showed up for Thursday's ride and guess who was in the mix? None other than Brent Watkinson. It was sure good to see him and even better to see him back on his mountain bike. Welcome back Brent, hope the leg continues to improve.
We perspired our way up Malde Creek road to the NEW start to Tamarac Trail. The trails crew built a great piece of single track that avoids the two rocky fire road climbs that you had to do before. Then we made our way down the trail to the junction of Dukabor Draw. This a fun trail. You can even get the odd bit of air here and there. Take a look at this picture of Al Santano. It looks like I photoshopped him into the picture BUT NO just a cheap camera and a bad photographer and he really did get good air(more than six inches is good for me).
Finished off the ride by going down the old Dukabor Draw up track to the double track and down to Malde Creek road followed by a screaming ramble down the rail grade trying to catch the birthday boy Dave Shannon who was in a hurry to get home to his cake. Check out his grin, sure is happy for a guy getting a year older. That's what being a member of the Holy Wow Gang can do for you.

Thursday Night Ride(Aug 20)

When: Thursday, August 20, 2009 @ 6:00PM
Where: Above Norm's House
Ride: Up Malde to Whiskey on the Rocks and down to Warfield.

Refreshments @ Dave Shannon's to help him celebrate his birthday. We may want to leave a couple of trucks in Warfield to help with the shuttle back to Rossland.

Mystery Weigh-In

Tuesday night's ride. originally billed as a mystery ride turned into just that a mystery. It was a mystery what ride we were going to do.

The ride turned into a magical mystery tour with some guys riding one route and others riding another route. All 8 of us rode up to the top of KC and enjoyed the view of Rossland on a hot August night(see pictures in album at right). Most of us rode down Pale Ale while a couple of rock and rollers tackled the ever rocky KC Ridge Trail. We met at the bottom of Pale Ale and continued down Old Farts Delight until we reached the up track of Green Door.

At this point there was nearly a call put in for a truck to pick us up in Warfield but wiser heads prevailed with the rationale that we should be able to climb this if we hope to be able to survive in Sun Valley, so up we went. There were a few buckets of sweat left on the trail, some of us looked like we had fallen in a creek. When questioned about why we looked so wet the response was that we had fallen in a creek, only problem was that there was no creek, must of been a mystery creek.

With the climb under our belts we headed off to Brett Ferguson's for a little refreshment. Brett and Nancy had put on a spread for us. We had smokies, popcorn, potato salad and of course, cold beers. What a great way to end a mystery ride. Thanks Nancy and Brett.

Just before our feast we decided to use Brett's scale to shed some light on the mystery of whose bike was the lightest or heaviest. After the weigh in I believe (correct me if I am wrong) the Prez won with a weight of 40lbs and the treasurer lost with a weight of 32lbs, everyone else was in between.
All in all a great hot August night.

Monday, August 17, 2009

Tuesday Night Ride(Aug 18)

Unforgetable Thursday Night Ride (Aug 13)

Gee I forgot to post a report for Thursday night. We had 5 riders turn out for a bit of a slip fest. The ride took us up Monte Cristo to the Technogrind to the Top of KC down Pale Ale back up to the Saddle and down Lower Snake. Good work out. We had a beer in my newly reorganized shop, lots of space, Norm should be proud of me, we'll see what he says when he gets back from holidays.

The rain held off again and we got in a good ride up Red Head. We were joined by Brett Ferguson, Bob Reardon and the Prez (Don Bowie). Welcome back guys, it was good to have you back. We also had Darryl Fry join us, hope it wasn't too much of an "old guy ride" for you Darryl.
After the ride Stewart Burwash put on a fantastic spread and raised the bar for after ride refreshments. Thanks Stewart, great back yard and a great feast.

Forbidden Fruit Trail With Funny Signs

On Thursday 10 riders took on the trail with funny signs. These signs seemed to be written in a different language as you can see by the picture. The riding was nostalgic (haven't we been here before) and the huckleberries were fantastic. Norm strayed off the trail and then he picked up a stray but even the stray got scared and left. The riding was superb.
Just when we thought the evening couldn't get any better Kim guided us to his deck where cold beer and barbequed sausages awaited us. Double thank you Kim. Perfect EDO eve.

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Thursday Night Ride(Aug 6)

When: Thursday, Aug 6, 6:00PM
Where: Kim Mercer's House
Ride: Miner's via Larry's to Gas Line and up Red Head to Sally's then down Red Head.

After ride: at Kim's for sausage and beer. See you there.

A Dusty Affair

This has been a fantastic season of riding and Tuesday Night (Aug 4) just upped the level of goodness by a notch. Six of the gang turned out for the climb up Malde Creek in the heat, but no sun. The smoke from forest fires and perhaps thin cloud cover blocked the sun but trapped the heat. Malde was a as fun as ever. We crested the summit and worked our way up rock crush road to the Tamarack trail head. The Tamarack trail is an awesome addition to our trail network and we have enjoyed it numerous times. The trail is quite new and the surface is not settled so it provided a fair amount of dust(still cleaning it out of my eyes and nose this morning). After riding Tamarack to Drake's intersection we decided to ride Drake's in reverse. We did not realize how much up hill that trail has when you are going the other way. Quite the workout. We even got to sample the go around that the trail crew has put in to counter the blockage created by an irate land owner. It was pretty rough and dusty but after a little more work and a winter it should be good. On to Al Santano's for a well earned beer. All in all a superb night of single track. Rolling single track is kind of fun.

There were only 4 of us but there were berries enough for many more. What a find. I am not going to give away the location. See if you can guess. The riding was just as good as the berries.

Dog Gone Good Ride

Tuesday night had been hot and muggy so we decided it was time to go to Nancy Greene Lake on Thursday to ride, swim, barbeque some sausages and swill a few cold ones . The trail that we rode is called Vertically Descending Nancy(politically correct name). The only problems that we encountered was rain, cold, thunder, lightening, slippery logs and roots, and a Dog Gone wandering dog named Murray. These obstacles did not put us off the ride. We got drenched riding up the road to the trail head that still did not stop us. The first drop in contained a super slide of a log but still no stopping the Holy Wow Gang. The smell of smoke from a fire hung in the air and the sounds of a helicopter scanning the forest for smoldering lightening strikes did not deter us as we had committed to ride so let's get on with it. Then Murray the dog decided to go for a walk into the forest and not come back even when called. This nearly stopped us, along with the thought of 15 Canadians laying in a freezer (inside info required). Well we finally found the dog and the Canadians ended up OK because they were huddled together sharing body heat and using a cardboard box to insulate the outside members. The ride was great and we all said that it needed to be ridden again when it was not as slippery. Al Santano schooled us on the drops. We opted out of the swim(too cold) and went to the comfort of Norm's deck for the barbeque (helped with the rescue of the Canadians). Thanks Norm. Don't know if Murray the dog will be riding again. Only time will tell.

Thursday Night Ride(July 23)

When: Thursday July 23 @ 5:30 PM
Where: Greener's House
Ride: Bring your vehicle(or get a ride) with your bike and bathing suit because we are going up to Nancy Greene Lake to ride Vertically Descending Nancy, going for a swim, cooking some sausages and enjoying a cool one.

This should be fun. Might become an annual. Please RSVP so that I can plan the sausages. Looking forward to the ride.

Hot Night-Cool Ride

It was a hot July night which prompted the nine riders that showed up (great turn out for July) to chose a ride that was in the shade and kept you moving. The pick was the D&D loop (the Prez and I named it some years ago). We rode up the front of Red as if heading for the Dread Head but turned off at the Gertrude Mine trail and zipped our way down to the gas line down to Larry's and then down Curly's to the beer fund on Dave's deck. Super outing for a hot July night.

Now on to the ride:
When: Tuesday July 21 @ 6:00 PM
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Whatever we decide when we get there.

Beers @ Dave N's house after the ride.

Vancouver Can Be Beautiful

When you can't ride you hope to find something to entertain yourself. This picture was taken at Crescent Beach in White Rock.  I had never been there before. Got to sit and watch the sun set. Great entertainment.  Keep riding.

Blogger Out of Town

I will be out of town until July 17, so the default ride will be show up at Greener's at the regular time and do some form of the circle ride. I will get back to ride posting when I return. In the mean time I may post some reports from MEC in Vancouver, White Rock and Snow Covers.

See you soon.

Thursday Night Ride(July 7) Report

Two riders attended Thursday's night's ride, Murray and Stu did the loop from Norm's thru Malde Creek, New Tamarac Trail , Drake's and to Murray's for refreshments. We met Al at the top of Malde Creek who was riding the same loop backwards. Good ride and the new Tamrac Trail is getting better every ride.

Thanks to Murray for the report.

Circle Ride To Be Annual

The circle ride was a blast (I even got to fall off my bike again). When we first started to ride in a circle it seemed that the circle would never end but finally someone took the bulls by the horns and led us up to Moe's and on to the T-Bar to the Top of the old Silver Load Chair and we sampled all the old runs from the days when Red used to run the lift for biking. They were in surprisingly good condition. Everyone road some form of stunt on Snakes and Ladders. Very interesting ride.
Then the evening really got started. Stopped at Sully's for a pop which made Norm hungry. Took out a loan from Sully's daughter (thanks Abby) so we could go to the Rock Cut for wings and beer. We needed the loan because we had no money. After at least 10 chickens died and 3 jugs of beer we honored the age old tradition by riding down the stairs.YEE HAAA!!!! Rode in the dark up Moe's and went to Greener's for a night cap. OH it is great to be 12 years old.

HAPPY CANADA DAY to everyone.

Holy "Double-D" Wow!!!!!

Well boys(all 12 years old at heart) I think we out did ourselves on this one. It definitely ranked a one of the best double down hills ever. 24 riders, 2000 vertical feet of climbing and 3000 vertical feet of single track, what a night!! The only thing that could of made it perfect was to have Brent Watkinson , Dario Cescon, Brett Ferguson and John Lord riding with us. A great big thank you to Brent and Dario for looking after the cooking and to Stewy Burwash for taking over so the cooks could recreate. Thanks to John Lord for entertaining Rick Greene and Dave Nutini on the phone around the fire at 12:30 AM our time. Nice to chat with John. I am sure the road warrior Fergusoni was thinking about us wherever he is.
I only got a few pictures and some video clips but I know that others took pictures and shot video, so when I get some of it I will post it.
Special thanks to Greener for the use of the boy's summer clubhouse(his deck) and for his organizational skills(getting refreshments and food).
HOLY HOLY HOLY WOW WOW WOW!!!!

Red Head Was A Tad Greasy!

Tuesday night saw another record turn out of 14 riders eager to climb up to the Red Head trail head and slip and slide their way down one of the classic trails in the area. The riding was quite good but a little wet in spots. The odd participant was caught skidding down the trail and over the bridges. The trails people have added some new bridge work over some of the really muddy spots. They have even thrown in a few little entertainment stunts which added to the enjoyment of an already great trail.

Remember, only 1 more sleep until double downhill. Looks like we have a good crowd. Get ready for the climb to the Top of Red. See you Thursday.

Tuesday Night Ride(June 23)

When: 6:00PM, Tuesday, June 23
Where: Rick Greene's House
Ride: Curly's to Miner's to Gas Line to Red Head back on Larry's to Greener's.

Thought we should stay on this side for the evening and maybe take it easy in preparation for the double-downhill.

Annual Double Downhill(Thur June 25)

It is that time of year again, time for the double downhill celebration of the long days of the year. We have changed the format a bit this year to lower our carbon footprint and save some time.(more time for sausages and beer) The route will only involve one shuttle ride up from Warfield.

When: Thursday June 25 @ 5:00PM
Where: Leaving from Rick Greene's place at 5:00 PM
Ride: Climb up Red Mt. via the Cascade Highway and the road to the top of T-Bar to top of Red(bit of a grunt)but then the sweet wicked downhill starts. Down Red Top, down Red Head, down to tunnel over to KC saddle then down Pale Ale down Milky Way down to Warfield. This should make room for sausages and beers at the afterfire at Greener's.
Cost: $10(covers gas and sausage feed) NEW THIS YEAR the event is a BYOB affair so chill your favorite refreshments and bring them to Greener's before the ride.

Please RSVP by no later than Monday June 22, so that we can organize food and transportation

TechnoAleLatte (Thur Jun 18)

The ride turned into a pedal fest with the main group riding Technogrind to Pale Ale to Milky Way and back up the Wagon Road to Snuggsy's for cold ones. Thanks John Snuggs. Never seen as many mosquitos as there were at the top of the Monte Cristo road. They were thick and hungry.

Check out Norm trying to teach Murray the dog how to jump. Pretty good form Norm. Have a look at the album posted to the right. A few people tried to alter the forest on the way down Pale Ale. We need to visit that trail and do a few upgrades. Maybe we can make a trip up there before the double downhill. Let me know if you are interested. Maybe Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Thursday Night Ride(June 18)

When: 6:00PM Thursday June 18

Only 8 more sleeps until DOUBLE DOWNHILL!!!

Tamarack Was Terrific

What a gang we had for our first ride of the Tamarack trail.  Fifteen energetic riders turned out for a single track feast that included the new Tamarack trail.  It was superb and we continued all the way down Dukabor Draw to Paterson.  A good time was had by all.  The only bad thing was that I forgot my camera.  Oh well, we were all going so fast that it would have been hard to take pictures anyway.

Happy Birthday Rick Greene

We had a great time last Thursday at Rick's place. There was even yummy cup cakes and a card for Rick on his Birthday.  He wanted to share the card with everyone so have a good look.

Thursday on Crown Point

Check out Sully keeping it together on a bridge near the top of Crown Point.

The weather was balmy the uphill was up and 007 was just as I remembered it, A GRUNT. The ride up was well worth it though because Crown Point did not disappoint. Everyone enjoyed the ride and the race to Warfield on the Rail Grade reached extreme speeds. WOW!!

The beers and fire were right up to snuff and a good time was had by all. Sorry about the chair Greener and HAPPY BIRTHDAY one more time.

Thursday Night Ride(June 11)

When: 6:00PM Thursday, June 11
Where: Meet in lower Rossland, above Norm's house
Ride: Malde to Tiger Main to 007 to Crown Point to Warfield. Trucks will be waiting @ Warfield Hall.

Looking forward to Crown Point, it is just opened again after some logging. People say that the effect has been minimal. We will return to Greener's for beers from the HW Fund(bring your money).

Don't forget the Double Downhill coming up on June 25. We have an exciting new route planned for the event. There will be more information in the near future. Stay tuned to the blog.

Tue Night Dread Head

The climb up Red lived up to its reputation. The President threatened to buy a road bike. Most of us sweat out at least four beers, which had to be replaced, while sitting around the fire. A fire that Rick started in his usual flare. What a great night!!
A good crew turned out for the climb and sweet decent as you can see by the photo at Poochie's Cabin. I am trying to include a video for the first time, let me know how it works.

Tue Night Ride (June 9)

When:  6:00 PM Tuesday June 9
Where:  Rick Greene's House
Ride:   Cascade Highway, T-Bar, Haul Road to Top of Red and ride what has come to known as The Red Dred.

I have not ridden this yet this year, and we did not finish Tamarac Trail on Saturday trails day, so we can't ride the new trail yet.  Just a word about Tamarac, it is going to be awesome and the Holy Wow Gang put their signature on two SUPER FLOW corners.  A good kilometer of trail was built by a very energetic crew.  The whole trail is not brushed out yet, but should be done soon so that we can give it a go.
The pot luck was good and the HW Gang held up its end of the keg and prizes.  A good time was had by all.

The Dewdney Trail

A strong group of Holy Wowers turned out Thursday evening to ride up up up the Cascade Highway to the fly infested top and descended the Dewdney Trail as fast as they could to try and stay ahead of those same flies. There were 12 of us, including brother Brett (Welcome back Brett) and a couple of youngsters in Joseph Hopkins and Steven Shannon. The Shannon's cornered the market on flat tires but other than that there were no incidents, not even at Watkinson's folly. The track was a wee touch rough but everyone enjoyed the ride. "Way better than the walk on Full Monte on Tuesday night" was the predominant comment over beers at Murray's after the ride. Thanks to Murray for the post ride recovery therapy and thanks to Greener for the cold beer intravenous in the truck at the bottom of the ride. The Dewdney was perrrrfect.

Don't forget trail building day on Saturday June 6 @ 9:00 AM in the Centennial Trail parking lot. See you there.

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Thur Night Ride(June 4)

When:  6:00 PM Thursday, June 4
Where:  Murray Gilchrist's House OR Museum
Ride: Ride up the Cascade Highway to Dewdney to Paterson truck ride back up.

Time to ride the Dewdney Trail before it gets really beat up.  We are going to do a truck drop in the valley. Dave will have his truck with Greener's trailer.  Murray is going to help with the shuttle drop.  Will need a people carrier along with Dave's truck.  If you are driving to Murray's and can be there at 5:30 PM we might be able to use your vehicle for passengers.  Let me know by email(davidnutini@telus.net) or phone(250-362-9571) if you are in to using your vehicle for part of the drop.

Full Monte Was The Full Deal

The Full Monte did not disappoint. The new route needs some tweaking but maybe sometime in the near future we can work on the logistics. The dozen riders that came out were right on their game and made mince meat out of the rocks roots and stunts that the Full Monte had to offer. Check out Al Santano in the picture. There were some firsts, with riders riding the rocky hairpins and doing jumps that they had never done before. GREAT ride guys.
We had the first fire of the season on Greener's deck (the fire starter and igniter still works wonders) and the beers were dynomite!!!!
Don't forget that Saturday is trails day, we should get a group together and put our signature master trail building skills on a portion of this new trail they are building. See you Thursday.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Tue Night Ride-It's JUNE!!

When: 6:00 PM Thursday May 27
Where: @ Rick Greene's house
Ride: Top of Red to do full Red Top Head trail.

Brother Al Santano was up to the top of Red and sent me pictures to show how nice it was.  I have included one of them in this post.  Thanks Al.

Beers will be @ Bob Reardon's house after the ride.  I do not know where he lives so you will have to keep up to him and his bionic hip in order to find out.  I am in Kelowna for the weekend and will not make the ride.  Would someone take some pictures for me so I can post them on this blog?  Thanks.

Tour de Snuggs (Tue Night Ride)

Check out this picture of the tour master himself in his wonderful little domain. Great spot John and a super tour even though it was "A LITTLE WET".
There were 8 tour members and we jockeyed about in the peloton as we toured the mountain close to violin lake. The trails were a little like lakes but the cabin was beautiful. Thanks John.
Down the rail grade drafting for speed took us to Dave Shannon's for a bike wash and a beer. It tasted very good. Dave gave us a ride back up in the Burban. He said he could tell that we only had 8 riders this time because the truck had a much easier time of it. Thanks Dave.
Check out the pics in the album to the right.

Monday, May 25, 2009

Tuesday Night Ride(May 26)

When: 6:00PM Tuesday May 26
Where: Norm Hopkin's house
Ride: Malde to Tiger Main to lower Cherry Poppins to John Snugg's cabin to Rail Grade to Dave Shannon's in Warfield for refreshments

I will make a quick pass past Greener's on my way down just to make sure that we do not leave any stragglers. John Snuggs and Dave Shannon are arranging the shuttle and such. The weather should be good.

KC Ridge to Old Rubber Head

Thursday was a great night. The weather was excellent, best we have had in a long time. I think there were a baker's dozen of us but who is counting. I am never going to list names again because I will forget someone and they will be disappointed.(sorry George) All in all a great night of riding. The trail surfaces were perfect and the return to the Old Rubberhead was very nostalgic.
The refreshments at Al Santano's were perfect. Thanks Al. The ride home in a warm truck was awesome too.
Check out the slide show of pics on the right.

Holy Wow Rookie Featured in Paper

Holy Wow rookie Mike Tench got his picture in the local paper, along with an interview.  He was riding at Moab and took a copy of the Trail Times with him in order to be photographed with the paper.  Turns out that Moab is a sister city of Rossland.  Why does it have to be a sister what about a brother city or maybe a relative city?  Anyway, Mike is in a wee bit of trouble because he did not mention his affiliation with the Holy Wow Gang? We will have to seek retribution.  Nice one Mike.

Thursday Night Ride (May 21)

When: 6:00PM
Where: @ Greener's
Ride: KC to KC Ridge to Cemetary to Old Rubber Head to All Santano's for refreshments.

We will try the KC ridge trail. Hopefully it has been cleaned up. It supposedly has been subject to some illegal trail modifications. Let's check it out. See you there.

Tuesday (May 19) Report

Mother nature tried to dampen our spirits with cold wind and hard rain but she failed to stop 8 members of the Holy Wow Gang from riding Dukabor Draw. At 6:00PM the sky was black and rain was falling like COLD water from a tap. Nine of us showed up at Greener's for the start of the ride. It was raining really hard and so we decided to wait a bit and see if it would stop.
Nine showed up, how come only 8 rode is the question you are asking? Poor Murray blew a spoke nipple on the wheel I had tensioned for him(my fault) so he decide to skip the ride. I will try and make it up to him.
The skies cleared and we rode. It was a good ride, a little wet and mucky but no rain fell. We haven't been rained out yet in this very wet spring season.

Dukabor Draw Had Everything

There was a great turn out for the Saturday long weekend ride and it was warm for a change. There were 10 of us including 3 ladies (allowed on the weekends) and everybody enjoyed the ride.  We are still hiking through snow in some spots and there is a lot of mud and water but it is just great to be riding. Stay tuned for a Monday ride.

Thursday Night @ the Oasis

Well, we did not let the weather deter us but it sure looked ugly as we pedaled our way up the Nancy Greene highway.  There was some moaning from the six riders that showed up but in the end everyone was smiling.
Neptune Creek road was a mud bath but the Oasis trail was in perfect shape and Rick, Dave, Kim, Bob, Norm and Mike ripped it up and even found the odd lake to wash our bikes in as you can see from this picture of Bob Reardon.
The beers and music were superb at Mike Tench's house.  Thanks Mike. Everyone is looking forward to Dukabor Draw on Tuesday night.

John Lord Gets New Wheels

John Lord has new wheels.  Check them out. It is a Mongoose Teocali, looks really nice.

Tuesday On Pale Ale-Milky Way

Nine of us braved the cool weather (3°C and snow showers) to ride up
KC for the first time this year in order to ride Pale Ale and Milky
Way. It was very slippery. Murray Gilchrist cleared out some trees
and made the ride very enjoyable. Hope the saw (head and ear ) is OK
Murray. The climb up Green door is getting to be bearable maybe even
better than the Wagon Road. A good time was had by all.
Greener got the beer fund going, so we were not without refreshment at the end of the ride. Looking forward to Thursday Night.

Dario rocks the rock on Milky Way.

Rick shows us how to do it.

The Old Guy getting smoother with age.

Norm's Birthday

Here's wishing Norm Hopkins, a long time member of the Holy Wow Gang a very Happy Birthday. I noticed that his boy Mike gave him a nice pair of Dakine shorts to replace the Kona ones he has been wearing forever. Happy Birthday Norm. Love ya man!!!!

Oasis was SWICKED!!!

Kim, Dario, Murray and Dave dropped their work around the house and rode Oasis.  We rode up the highway through the odd flurry and cool breeze, and arrived at Neptune Creek Road warm as toast after the pedal.  Nice workout. Now for the fun part. The road was wicked fast and the trail was smooth and sweet. Great ride!! Maybe we will do it again on Thursday.
